I love my job. The reason I joined the professoriate was to give back to the student affairs profession by helping develop new student affairs educators. Regardless of the course, I'm generally making connections to two aspects of student affairs and higher education: assessment and social justice. Assessment is critical. In student affairs, we call ourselves educators. Assessment provides the means by which we can learn the extent to which students are learning and growing through their collegiate experiences. Social justice is a central value for the student affairs profession. We have to work to foster inclusive communities in which students can develop and exercise their voices.
Combine the two, and we have to ensure that our efforts to evaluate our work and students' experiences are inclusive of all of the students we serve.
